Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide;
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
Earth’s joy grow dim, its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see –
O Though who changest not, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour;
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness;
Where is death’s sting, Where, grave thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies;
Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadow flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

Abide with Me
by Henry F. Lyte
(1793-1847)

Henry F. Lyte wrote this based on the account of Christ’s appearance after His death on the cross to two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Luke 24:29:

But they urged him strongly:
“Stay with us for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.”
So he went in to stay with them.

Abide – to dwell or to stay.
“Abide with me” are words that I often scribble in my thoughts. It is a plea to have Him stay and give me some sort of comfort. I groan for His presence but then realize
He never left. He is here. Just waiting for me to keep still and silent. He is present at this very minute and if only I open my heart to that truth; to see more clearly that He is in control and on the move.In control even if I mess things up.
In control even if I say the wrong words.
In control even if I sin.
On the move orchestrating His plan for me.
On the move of revealing more of Himself to me.
On the move to amaze me (just how He told Habakkuk)

Yes. Only by His grace does He abide in me.
