Charlotte Mason
Charlotte Mason
Charlotte Mason (1842-1923) was a remarkable Christian woman in the 19th century who truly loved children and worked diligently to change the educational climate of her day. Her concept of living books as a foundation for educating children shaped many of the schools of Great Britain at the turn of the twentieth century. She founded the Parent’s National Education Union and established the “House of Education”, a teacher training college in Ambleside. She outlined her methodology in a series of six scholarly books on education. She wanted to develop a unifying philosophy of education and it is characterized by central tenets.

Our Living Learning
Gina Roldan “met” Charlotte Mason in one of the aisles of a library in Santa Clara, Ca through Susan Schaeffer’s For the Children’s Sake. She felt right at home with the idea of a gentle yet profound education for her children and immediately bought all the pink volumes and started immersing herself in CM’s words as she nursed, did chores, and transitioned to being a mother of 4. Through Charlotte Mason’s advice, she did not focus much on ABC’s or 123s during The Early Years of her children. Instead, she led them out in nature to play and wonder almost every day with one of the CM Volumes and a journal tucked in her bag. She grew in knowledge by slowly reading through CM’s words, leading other families in activities, and presenting a feast of living ideas to her children. After around 6 years in the states, her family came back home to Philippines where Charlotte Mason was still not as known. She felt the need to share CM’s method through a children’s book club that she led. Our Living Learning was thus founded and provided resources and classes for both children and parents. With the growth of the CM Homeschool Community, Living Learning Homeschool was established in order to provide accreditation support and homeschool accountability.
