Towards A Philosophy of Education
This philosophy of education begins with the belief that education is a life. Children are whole persons, capable of thought and responsibility, and learning should nourish both mind and character.
Knowledge is formed through living ideas, encountered in good books, nature, and the arts, rather than through rote instruction. Habits of attention and self-discipline are gently cultivated, allowing children to take ownership of their learning.
Rooted in Christian faith, this approach seeks not efficiency or pressure, but a full and meaningful life marked by wisdom, delight, and purpose.
Who is Charlotte Mason?
Charlotte Mason was a Christian educator in the 19th century whose work gave shape to this philosophy of education. Her thoughtful writings and tireless efforts helped renew the educational landscape of her time, influencing schools across Great Britain at the turn of the twentieth century.
She founded the Parents’ National Education Union and the House of Education in Ambleside to train teachers in these principles, and articulated her approach in six volumes on education. More than creating a method, she offered a coherent and humane vision of learning, one that continues to guide parents and educators seeking a richer, more faithful way of teaching children.
The Principles of Living Education
Charlotte Mason described education not as a system to master, but as a life to be lived. She spoke of three guiding instruments through which true education takes place.
Atmosphere
Children are shaped by the quiet influence of home life, through relationships, rhythms, and the spirit in which learning unfolds. A peaceful, ordered, and life-giving atmosphere nurtures growth without constant instruction.
Discipline
Character is formed through gentle, consistent habits. By cultivating attention, obedience, and self-control, children learn to govern themselves and engage more fully with their studies and the world around them.
Life
The mind is nourished by living ideas found in good books, nature, art, music, and meaningful experiences. Education is about feeding the mind with ideas that inspire thought, imagination, and understanding.
