Nature Study Notes:

We learned that not all caterpillars hang themselves on a twig or branch in the “cocoon” stage.  We thought this particular caterpillar died in the process of changing into a winged creature since it just shriveled and laid at the bottom of the caged net instead of hanging on the twig we placed inside. We right away assumed that it died and just threw it away.

After we threw it, we read on and tried to figure out what type of caterpillar it was. We learned some interesting facts that coincided with our observations. We discovered that this particular caterpillar forms its cocoon on earth, under moss or dry leaves. It saddened us a bit since we could have witnessed it turning into a beautiful Oleander Hawk moth if we had known more of its life cycle.
